General IELTS

The IELTS general training test aims at evaluating your ability to communicate the English language proficiently. This test is taken for non-academic purposes, such as professional licenses and immigration visas. The IELTS general speaking and listening IELTS general exams are pretty much relatable to the IELTS academic test; however, the general IELTS training test includes a unique reading and writing section as well.

At OIS, we have experienced online tutors to help you prepare for the IELTS general training exam faster. You will discover in our course a handful of useful study materials to pass the test with a high score.

Understanding the General IELTS Listening Test

  • The IELTS general listening test is designed to assess your listening abilities in a native English accent and voice. It consists of four different audio recordings, and you get a series of 40 questions to answer in 30 minutes.
  • The IELTS general reading test takes 60 minutes and includes 40 questions to examine your reading skills. It contains three text sections based on different complexity levels (short, long, and complex) to read and answer.
  • The IELTS general speaking test consists of three different sections. A native speaker asks 12 questions that you need to answer using your microphone. You get 15 minutes to complete this test, and its goal is to evaluate your spoken English abilities.
  • The IELTS general writing test takes 60 minutes, comprising two tasks in order to check your knowledge of vocabulary and writing styles. The first task (1) requires you to write a letter of 250 words, while in the second task (2), you need to write an essay of 250 words.

Tips for General IELTS

  • Always read the questions carefully before the audio recording begins. This will help you select the correct information.
  • If you don’t have time to read articles, magazines, or other English books, practice identifying and summarizing main concepts within the texts.
  • You should know the test format of each task and try to do online IELTS test practice by answering the same types of questions. Create a strategy for each task as it will help you to understand what they relate to.
  • The best method to write an impressive essay is to create a structure.
  • Watch English movies or TV series regularly on YouTube or other platforms. This is the best way to improve your pronunciation.
  • Record the audio of what you speak. This is another great way to assess where you lack. It will also help you improve your speaking abilities.
  • If, anytime, you happen to know that you’ve skipped an answer, don’t waste your time freaking out. Instead, move on to the next question and stay focused.

What are the Key Points to Keep in Mind on the Day of General IELTS?

  • Know the format
  • Before going for the IELTS test, make sure you know the format of each task and the types of questions. This will free up your time of understanding “what is being asked” within a particular task.
  • Timed Practice
  • No matter if you are preparing for the IELTS speaking test question, writing practice, listening, or reading a general practice test, you must use a timer for practice. The time limitations often trip up test-takers. Putting this pressure off will give you enough peace to answer all the questions in a timely manner.
  • Strengthen your Grammar
  • Spelling, Grammar, and vocabulary ― these factors matter a lot. So, ensure that you use correct spellings and grammar in your answers.
  • Avoid Minor Mistakes
  • Be careful while recording your audio; don’t record a noun as singular if it was assumed to be plural! Such minor mistakes can cost you a big loss.
